In Honor of Red Ribbon Week

National Family Partnership recently announced that this year’s Red Ribbon Week will take place October 23-31 and the theme for 2015 will be “Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free”. Formerly known as the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, National Family Partnership is a nonprofit organization that formed in 1980 by a group of parents determined to play a leadership role in national drug prevention.

According to the Red Ribbon Campaign web site (www.redribbon.org), the winner of the 2015 National Red Ribbon Theme Contest was middle school student Kristofer Calhoun from Solon Middle School in Solon Ohio.  Thirteen years old, Kristofer said that, in his eyes, the theme of “Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free” means the following: “Respecting yourself means look at yourself every day and treating yourself like you would treat someone you loved most in the world. If you do drugs, you really don’t have self-confidence and you don’t respect yourself.”

Drug education and prevention is as important now for teens and families as much as ever. With a nationwide prescription opioid and heroin epidemic, dangerous new trends in marijuana and synthetic drugs and easier accessibility of illicit drugs for teens, outreach efforts like the ones made by National Family Partnership are imperative to help slow the rising tide of teen drug abuse.

National Family Partnership works through a growing network of nearly 100 partner organizations, including local coalitions, PTO and PTA groups, parent committees and community groups, and offers aid in the areas of drug education and awareness, advocacy and national resources for organizations and families. More information on both Red Ribbon Week 2015 and National Family Partnership can be found at the organization’s web site, www.nfp.org.
