Comprehensive Addiction Treatment at Maryland Addiction Recovery Center

What does it mean to offer comprehensive addiction treatment? Typically, a response you will hear from a rehab or drug treatment center is “we treat the mind, body and spirit.” That answer does encapsulate some aspects of drug treatment, but it is important to look at the word to understand the meaning.

The word “comprehensive” is defined as “complete; including all or nearly all elements or aspects of something.” So here at Maryland Addiction Recovery Center, when we say that we offer comprehensive treatment for addiction, what we mean is that our treatment approach includes all elements or aspects of the life of the patient receiving care for their addiction or co-occurring issues.

How We Perform Comprehensive Addiction Treatment

  1. We treat substance misuse, substance use disorder, or addiction though evidence-based therapeutic practices like group therapy, individual therapy, family therapy and psychiatry, incorporating both psychoeducation as well as process-oriented approaches.

  1. We treat the underlying causes and conditions for the addiction or substance use disorder. We look at issues such as mental health conditions, trauma, family dynamics, family of origin, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, amongst others.

  1. We look at co-occurring mental health disorders and psychiatric issues. Our clinical team and medical team are psychiatrists, psychologists, and master’s level mental health therapists, well-versed in psychiatric and mental health issues patients experience.

  1. We account for medical issues. Our nurse practitioner incorporates care for patients related to non-acute medical issues, and partner with local medical practitioners and providers if a patient needs ongoing medical care for their medical needs.

  1. We incorporate peer recovery support internally and community-oriented recovery externally to help patients find connection and a community.

  1. We engage, treat, and support the patient’s family. A patient’s recovery chances go up exponentially if their family and loved one’s are engaged in their treatment, and those family members and loved one’s take steps to find their own program of recovery.

  1. We help the patient move from dependence to independence. We aid and support them in finding purpose and direction. This includes academic goals, through the Caron’s College Success™ at Maryland Addiction Recovery Center collegiate recovery program, or through employment and career goals, through our Vocational Program.

  1. We help patients increase their life skills through important life skills development initiatives. This includes basic life skills like cleaning, cooking, and hygiene, but also increased life skills related to living a purpose-driven, life of independence.

  1. We support patients to engage in their own personal recovery path through community-based recovery organizations. While a patient receives clinical care through treatment, they are also supported to begin engaging in their own personal recovery outside the treatment environment. This could be local 12-Step meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA), SMART Recovery, Celebrate Recovery, or Refuge Recovery. Much of this is accomplished through MARC alumni, but also with members of the local recovery community.

  1. We incorporate holistic practices of healthy living, such as fitness, exercise, nutrition education, yoga, and other activities for patients to begin merging living in recovery with a healthy lifestyle.

  1. For those patients interested in continuing to or beginning to engage in religious affiliations, we support them in beginning to create connections in the local religious communities, regardless of which religious affiliation they choose.

  1. We support patients to engage in social outings that begin to teach them that a life of recovery does not have to be boring, by incorporating team building activities and social outings into their lives while in treatment.

Our belief is that, if addiction touches every aspect of a patient’s life, their treatment should incorporate every aspect of that person and their life, as well. In turn, they will be more prepared to navigate any potential barriers of or pitfalls in recovery and be more prepared to thrive in recovery. It is our belief that comprehensive addiction treatment includes a mind, body, spirit approach, as well as a real life approach that will equate to not simply being in recovery, but a high quality of life that the patient can be proud of once their treatment experience ends and their life begins.
