Joey Pisano

Joey Pisano is a Primary Therapist at Maryland Addiction Recovery Center. Originally from Sonoma, California, Joey moved to Maryland to complete her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Special Education at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She later re-located to Boston, Massachusetts, where she worked in a Boston Public Charter School before pursuing her Master’s in Social Work at Boston College.

During her graduate training, Joey completed clinical rotations at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, working alongside an OBGYN social worker supporting pregnant individuals with substance use disorders, and with the hospital’s spirituality Chaplin facilitating bereavement groups for parents experiencing pregnancy or infant loss and other forms of complicated grief. She also interned with the Addiction Consult Team at Massachusetts General Hospital and with the Alcohol and Other Drug Services at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Before joining MARC, Joey was awarded a fellowship opportunity with Atrius Health, where she provided outpatient treatment for individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health needs. Her diverse clinical background, from medical settings to academic environments, continues to shape her nuanced approach at MARC. Joey has a particular interest in supporting individuals navigating major life transitions, a focus informed by her work with pregnant and postpartum patients, bereaved parents, and individuals adjusting to new diagnoses, environments, and stages of recovery.

Joey identifies as an eclectic therapist, drawing from multiple evidence-based approaches to meet each patient where they are. Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Systems Theory are key foundations in her clinical practice.

Outside of work, Joey enjoys cooking, reading, getting creative, and spending time relaxing with her family and her cat, Cleo.

Our Editorial Guidelines

Part of the journey from substance use disorder into recovery is education. At MARC, we believe the best way to serve our addiction and recovery community is to create and elevate content, resources, curriculum, and other educational materials according to an established editorial standard.

Our aim is to activate and restore hope by sharing current, helpful, accurate, and practical data that applies to our patients and their loved ones.
