As America’s addiction crisis continues to grow and the need to break the stigma of addiction and treat substance use disorder as the chronic medical condition it is, there have been more and more calls for addiction treatment to mimic other healthcare services. That includes viewing and treating addiction as a chronic illness with long-term treatment through a continuum of care. That includes the use of evidence-based treatments through counseling, medication and support services. One major call coming from health officials and insurers is, when appropriate, to treat addiction with the use of outpatient services. Therefore, just like other chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, addiction should be appropriately assessed and treated with the appropriate level of clinical care. Sometimes this would be in a hospital or residential setting and sometimes in an outpatient setting.

Here at Maryland Addiction Recovery Center, we understand that individuals suffering from addiction come to treatment with different clinical needs, different life circumstances, different living situations and numerous other differences that can impact what type of care they need to overcome their addiction and treat their substance use disorder, mental health issue or co-occurring disorder. Therefore, we offer several different outpatient levels of care that are community-based and able to be accessed either directly by someone in need or by a patient leaving a residential level of care as a next step in their treatment experience.

PHP (Partial Hospitalization) Treatment

PHP is an outpatient level of care that is basically a day treatment (between 25-30 clinical hours a week.) Patients live at home or in outside supportive sober living residences and come to our clinical campus Monday through Friday for most of the day. Treatment includes a mixture of individual therapy with their Master’s Level primary therapist, different types of group therapy, family or couples therapy, psychiatry and group fitness/nutrition support.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Treatment

We offer two IOP programs: a day IOP program and an evening IOP program for working professionals that need to access treatment services outside of normal work hours. Our daytime intensive outpatient and evening intensive outpatient (IOP) programs both are comprised of individual therapy sessions with the patient’s Master’s Level primary therapist, different types of group therapy, family or couples therapy and psychiatry. Our daytime IOP program begins at five days a week, with groups occurring Monday through Friday 9:30am-12pm and individual and family sessions scheduled individually to meet the patient’s needs. Our evening IOP meets three evenings a week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm-9pm with individual, family and psychiatry sessions scheduled outside of those times to meet the patient’s needs.

We believe that patients must be met where they are at, both clinically and from a life circumstances perspective. Therefore, we believe in offering several different outpatient levels of care that patients can access based on need and even move between in terms of intensity depending on their progress. Outpatient levels of addiction care are vital next steps in the treatment continuum when a patient discharges from an inpatient or residential program and sometimes are more than enough for patients as standalone services to receive necessary treatment and begin their journey of recovery.
