Located in Maryland, Carroll County is a predominantly rural area with a population of 167,134. Carroll County has seen some population growth and has become increasingly suburban in recent years. Carroll County was rooted in 1837 from parts of Baltimore and Frederick Counties and was named after the signer of the American Declaration of Independence. The two most populated cities in the county are Westminster (the county seat) and Mount Airy.
Although Carroll County has a small population, it has not been exempt from our nation’s rising drug epidemic. Opiods, heroin, alcohol, prescription pills, and cocaine use have been on the rise.
There has been an increase in drug related overdose deaths in recent years. In 2012 there were only nine deaths. This number rose to 30 in 2015. In 2016, that figure was 48. According to recent data, the first half of 2018’s fatality rate is up 76% compared to the previous year. These statistics and rates are alarming.
