Partial Hospitalization Program, Randallstown
Sometimes a few treatment sessions each week leave too much time for old patterns, cravings, or mental health symptoms to take over. Our addiction treatment center near Randallstown offers PHP for adults who need more support than IOP or weekly outpatient care but do not require 24-hour residential treatment. At our Towson treatment center, PHP provides 6-8 hours of structured care, five days a week, while allowing appropriate clients to remain connected to everyday life.
Some people come to PHP after detox or residential treatment, while others step up because less intensive treatment has not provided enough support. We offer different PHP options based on how much support you need during treatment and outside clinical hours. Rather than looking at substance use alone, we consider your mental health, relapse risk, previous treatment, home environment, and current stability when determining how PHP should fit into your recovery.
PHP Provides More Daily Structure
PHP is designed for periods when a few treatment sessions each week leave too much time between appointments to manage cravings, difficult emotions, or patterns that can lead back to substance use. Clients attend treatment five days a week for 6-8 hours a day, creating a consistent therapeutic routine without requiring inpatient care. That additional time allows individual therapy, group counseling, psychiatric care, medication management when needed, and other therapeutic work to happen within the same treatment week.
That level of care can be especially important when you are medically stable but not yet ready for the independence of our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or outpatient treatment. You may still be going to work, caring for your family, and handling daily responsibilities while finding it increasingly difficult to stay stable without frequent clinical support. We look at how well you are functioning outside treatment, not simply whether you appear to be keeping up with everyday life.
The amount of time spent in PHP also gives you more opportunities to practice new skills, recognize patterns, and work through setbacks while clinical support is readily available. Instead of waiting several days until the next appointment to discuss what went wrong, you return to treatment throughout the week and can keep building on that work. This consistent rhythm can help prepare you for greater independence as your recovery becomes more stable.
Three PHP Options Match Different Recovery Needs
The right PHP setting depends partly on what you will return to after treatment each day. If you have a stable, substance-free home and reliable support, commuting to our Towson treatment center may make sense. If you need more accountability outside clinical hours, we offer two options that combine PHP with a structured living environment.
- Commuting PHP: Attend treatment at our Towson center and return home each day when your living environment supports recovery.
- PHP with sober living: Attend PHP while living in one of our structured, substance-free sober living homes, with added accountability outside treatment hours.
- Extended Care with Community Living: Participate in PHP while receiving additional support with life skills, healthy routines, mutual-aid involvement, and gradual reintegration into the community. Transportation between Community Living and the clinical campus is provided as part of this model.
Choosing among these options is a clinical decision, not simply a matter of convenience. We consider whether your home supports recovery, how much accountability you need outside treatment, and how prepared you are to manage everyday responsibilities without returning to old patterns. This allows us to match your living environment with the work you are doing in PHP instead of treating those two parts of recovery separately.
Addiction and Mental Health Are Treated Together
Substance use can become difficult to change when anxiety, depression, trauma, or other mental health symptoms are driving the same cycle. In PHP, we do not separate those concerns from addiction treatment or expect you to address them somewhere else. Your dual diagnosis treatment can include individual and group therapy, psychiatric care, and medication management when clinically appropriate, with the same team considering how your mental health and substance use affect one another.
This becomes especially important when it is unclear what is behind a setback. For example, drinking or drug use may increase during periods of depression, while substance use can also worsen mood, anxiety, sleep, and daily functioning. Looking at both sides helps us identify what needs attention rather than focusing only on stopping substance use and leaving the conditions that contribute to it untreated.
The therapy you receive depends on what is contributing to your substance use and what is making recovery difficult to maintain. We may use approaches such as CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, trauma therapy, and psychoeducation based on your symptoms, treatment goals, and progress. This allows the clinical work to address the patterns behind substance use instead of applying the same therapeutic approach to every client.

Recovery Extends Into Work, School, and Daily Life
What you learn in treatment has to work when you are dealing with stress, conflict, responsibilities, and other challenges in everyday life. PHP gives you regular opportunities to recognize the situations and patterns that have previously led back to substance use, then work on responding differently when those challenges arise. The goal is not simply to understand those patterns in therapy but to build healthier ways of handling them outside treatment.
For some clients, rebuilding stability also means relearning parts of daily life that became inconsistent during active addiction. MARC’s PHP and Extended Care model can incorporate life skills, healthy routines, mutual-aid involvement, and gradual reintegration into the community. Clients who need additional help preparing for independence can work on practical skills such as cooking and budgeting within community living rather than waiting until treatment ends to manage those responsibilities again.
Progress is not measured only by whether you have stopped using alcohol or drugs. We also look at how you handle everyday demands, use coping skills when problems arise, and manage responsibilities with less structure around you. These changes help us determine when you are becoming ready for greater independence in recovery.
PHP Is Part of a Longer Recovery Plan
Returning to substance use after treatment does not mean you have to start over with the same approach. If you have completed detox, residential care, IOP, or another program and struggled afterward, we look closely at where recovery began to break down. We consider what happened when you returned to everyday life, whether mental health symptoms were still affecting you, and whether you had enough support to manage the challenges that followed.
What happened in previous treatment also helps us decide what should be different this time. Someone who repeatedly returns to substance use soon after residential care may benefit from a slower transition through PHP and a structured living environment. If IOP has not provided enough clinical contact to make progress, PHP can provide a more intensive level of care before you return to a less demanding treatment schedule.
We use setbacks as information rather than simply repeating a treatment plan that did not meet your needs. Your treatment history, relapse patterns, current symptoms, and circumstances help us identify what may have been missing and what needs to change. That may mean more clinical care, a different living environment, greater attention to mental health, or a different path through the treatment continuum.
PHP Can Help When Previous Treatment Was Not Enough
PHP provides intensive treatment as one part of a longer recovery process. Clients in our extended-care model are asked to commit to at least 90 days of treatment, and many remain engaged for six to nine months as they move through different levels of care. The purpose is to give recovery time to develop beyond the initial period of stabilization rather than basing the entire treatment plan on a short episode of care.
That does not mean you remain in PHP for the entire treatment period. As you make progress, we reassess how much clinical structure you still need and can transition you into IOP and outpatient care. Individual and group therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, family work, and other parts of treatment can continue across these levels, so stepping down does not mean starting over with a new recovery plan.
Moving to a lower level of care is based on more than completing a certain number of weeks. We look at how consistently you are maintaining recovery, managing mental health symptoms, following through outside treatment, and handling greater independence. If those areas still need more work, we can continue providing a higher level of structure rather than moving you forward before you are ready.
