Maryland Addiction Recovery Center has partnered with Baltimore’s Jewish Community Services and nationally renowned Caron Treatment Centers to offer “Clearing the Path: Addiction Treatment & Recovery in the Jewish Community”, an event with the purpose of shattering the stigma of addiction in the Baltimore Jewish community in the hope that more of those in need will understand and seek treatment and recovery.

The event, taking place Thursday, December 11th at the Jewish Community Center at 5700 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD, will cost $30 and will have 6 hours of continuing education credits available for both social workers and psychologists

The speakers will include local speaker Rabbi Menachem Goldberger, Rabbi Meir Kessler of Boca Raton, Florida and Ike Dweck, Executive Director of the addiction treatment program SAFE in Brooklyn, New York.

Baltimore Jewish Communities

Baltimore’s Jewish community has been affected by addiction and overdoses for many years, however these issues are often kept secret or underground. From the most religious Orthodox Jews to the most reformed, addiction has its place in the Jewish community. Often the shame and guilt of a family member’s addiction has the family keeping the issue secret or refusing to seek needed treatment. For the more religious community members, those struggling with overcoming addiction will almost never go outside the community for help or turn to religious leaders for guidance. The religion itself and the many rules that govern it can often be a barrier for someone in need of treatment.

Brooklyn, New York dealt with this issue within its Jewish population for many years. Recently, Ike Dweck’s SAFE program was able to establish itself as a program culturally competent and understanding to those Jewish community members suffering from addiction and were able to partner with Brooklyn’s religious officials, giving them the blessing of treating the addicts within the community. Maryland Addiction Recovery Center, in the partnership with Caron Treatevement Centers and Jewish Community Services of Baltimore, are hoping to establish that same result for the local Baltimore Jewish community. Together as a partnership, the organizations have established a Jewish Recovery Network, a network of treatment providers culturally competent to meet the needs of the people and families suffering from addiction within the Jewish community. This network will allow for a continuum of care for the community and provide a greater ability for those in need to seek help and for those seeking help to have better, long term, sustainable recovery outcomes.
